THE CORE · ALWAYS ACTIVE

Co-opposition

The other is at once adversary and partner — with and against, in the same gesture.

Co-opposition — a single word for the paradox at the heart of the game. Not cooperation, then opposition, but both at once, inseparably: you build the exchange that you also seek to win. The two arrows circling the centre never stop — because this principle never stops. Unlike the paradoxical principles of play, which flare only in certain situations, coopposition is active at every instant of the game. The cooperative coordination can tip at any moment into direct confrontation — or not; and the confrontation, in turn, necessarily returns the game to its cooperative structure. The longer the cooperative phase lasts, the greater the chance that opposition erupts: even while cooperating, the players remain potential adversaries at every instant, like two superposed states in quantum physics. Remove it and capoeira falls apart: pure cooperation is dance, pure opposition is a brawl. It is the permanent engine — the reason the centre beats without pause. Co-opposition, the continuous flow and the paradoxical principles together compose Concept 05 of the field — the kaleidoscopic internal logic.

IN THE SYSTEM

→ Rhythm — The tempo that modulates every other parameter of the game.

→ Continuous flow — An insurmountable rule: never leaving the rhythm.

IN THE CORPUS

→ Capoeira Is Not Alone in the World
