Moraingy

A striking contest of festive gatherings, practised on the western and northern coasts of Madagascar, in Sakalava country: punches predominate, under the watch of the assembly, which may halt the bout.

ORIGINS & SOCIAL FUNCTIONS

A striking contest of the festive gatherings of Madagascar's west and north coasts, in Sakalava country: village celebration, communal assembly, and the honour of champions circulating with the festivals.

THE GAME

Punches predominate, under the gaze of the assembly, which may interrupt the combat at any moment. The bout is short, intense, and ends when the community judges it ended.

PLACE IN THE FAMILY

The moraingy holds the striking pole of the Malagasy world, and its decisive trait is the assembly's sovereignty: the fight belongs to the community, which opens, watches and closes it. This collective regulation of the blow, the crowd as implicit rule, is the same structure the family builds everywhere from the roda to the gayelle, here in its Indian Ocean form.
