Mouringué

Fist contests related to moraingy, held in Mayotte and the Comoros, in a circle at village festivities, and halted by the assembly.

ORIGINS & SOCIAL FUNCTIONS

Fist contests of Mayotte and the Comoros, held in the circle at village festivities, the Comorian shore of the moraingy world, carried across the channel by the long circulation of peoples between the islands and Madagascar.

THE GAME

Related to the moraingy: punches exchanged in the circle before the village, the assembly interrupting the bout when it judges fit.

PLACE IN THE FAMILY

The mouringue extends the Malagasy striking family across the Comoros channel, and demonstrates the family's geography: practices travelling with peoples, not as fixed styles but as a shared internal logic, the circle, the blow, the assembly's rule, re-instantiated on each shore.
