WHY THIS ARTICLE
Bimba's dominance is read as pure skill. The thesis adds the structural fact: he controlled every position of the field at once — a domination of the game as much as in it.
Every position at once
Bimba was promoter of the competitions, author of the rulebook, practitioner, and referee of the matches when he did not fight himself. Stronger technically, better surrounded and a finer strategist, he was in this context indisputably the best Bahian capoeirista — but his dominance was also of the field itself, not only of the ring.
A schism
His domination of the social field of capoeiragem led practitioners other than his pupils to question, in depth, the nature of the activity. What the Bahian champion proposed appeared, with growing clarity, as different — in rupture with the capoeira of carnival, religious processions and popular feasts. This irruption of a sporting capoeiragem, thought from the carioca model, provoked a scission of the Brazilian wrestling, even a schism whose consequences are still visible today.
Why it matters
To hold every role — rule-writer, promoter, referee, fighter — is to shape the contest before entering it. Bimba's supremacy was institutional before it was athletic, and it split capoeira in two.
