When Ladja and Damié Lived Side by Side

5 MIN READ

In the early twentieth century two forms coexisted on the island; the pacification of manners had the harder one give way, kicks and punches ceding to simulacra.

WHY THIS ARTICLE

The Martinican wrestling is often flattened into one thing. The thesis shows a harder and a softer form coexisting, and a historical drift by which strikes were replaced by feint and touch.

Two forms, one island

In the first part of the twentieth century, the damié and the ladjia coexisted on the island. Progressively, the pacification of manners got the better of the harder form: kicks and punches ceded definitively to simulacra.

What decides today

Today only prehension techniques — projections and immobilisations — serve to win the combat; the simulacra and light touches serve to maintain the tension between the two wrestlers, in a combat dynamic, and to preserve the cultural heritage of the Martinican combat art. Crossing Dunham's writings with the films of Le Vauclin renders the duel in all its structural and social complexity.

Why it matters

A living art drifts: it drops its hardest techniques, imports others, softens its strikes into signs. The 'traditional' danmyé is the sediment of that drift, not a fixed origin.
