The Only 'Real' Capoeira Was Invented in the 1930s
6 MIN READ
How a folkloric capoeira built by Bahian intellectuals in the 1930s imposed itself, everywhere, as the single authentic form.
WHY THIS ARTICLE
The collective imagination holds that Bahia is the cradle and the truth of capoeira, all other forms being unhappy deviations. The thesis shows this hierarchy is a construction of the 1930s, not a fact of origin.
A form built, then universalised
By the mid-twentieth century a single image of capoeira had won: Bahian, played by Black men, paced by the pandeiro and the berimbau. Every other version was relegated to the rank of unfortunate offshoot of the one authentic practice. Yet this folkloric capoeira was itself elaborated in the 1930s by Bahian intellectuals — it was not the immemorial root it claimed to be.
The vehicles of a belief
It spread through books, documentaries, films, press articles and folkloric shows, carried by a deliberate policy of the Bahia Tourism Office. Above all it was carried by the many Bahian teachers who migrated to the Sudeste in search of better living conditions, and who did not merely transmit it — they renewed it.
Why it matters
To call the Bahian form 'the real capoeira' is to mistake the winner of a twentieth-century contest for the origin of the game. The authenticity was manufactured, distributed and enforced — a history, not a nature.
