The Fighters Who Inherited a Ring Ethos They Never Chose

Without having lived them, the young players inherited the ethos and habitus of a pugilistic Rio that had steeped the city for over a century.
WHY THIS ARTICLE
The competitive turn of 1960s–70s capoeira is read as an external imposition. The thesis reads it as an inheritance — a ring ethos absorbed from a city shaped by a century of pugilism.
An inherited habitus
The players had developed a more objective game — faster, more powerful, more perfect kicks — and had built up the entries and projections, once embryonic. The game took on the look of combat, as in the first capoeiragem championships of 1905 and 1913, the golden age of sporting capoeiragem (1928–1940), the matches of the 1950s and the competitions of the early 1970s. Without having lived them, they had inherited the ethos and pugilistic habitus that had steeped Rio for over a century.
Dance and fight, by context
Now dance, now wrestling, the Senzala group tended toward one or the other pole according to the context of practice. The ring ethos was not chosen but absorbed — a disposition of the city passed into the game.
Why it matters
The combative cast of contemporary capoeira is neither pure imposition nor pure tradition. It is a habitus inherited from a pugilistic city — a past acting through bodies that never knew it directly.
