The Diagram That Gave Black People the Basics and White People the Sport

6 MIN READ

A 1980s presentation split capoeira in two — Capoeira/Cultura, illustrated by Black players and basic moves; Capoeira/Sport, by white players and complex technique.

WHY THIS ARTICLE

An anti-racist intention could produce a racially marginalising diagram. The thesis reads a 1980s scheme that hands the 'culture' (and only its rudiments) to Black people and the 'sport' (its complex, valued technique) to white people.

Two columns

A 1980s presentation divided capoeira in two. In the first, Capoeira/Cultura, four Black capoeiristas and the white professor illustrate the way one enters the game — the 'unwritten' rules, the basic movements. The second, Capoeira/Sport, is illustrated by eight white capoeiristas, showing the warm-up, the physical education, the belt-work and the jumps, takedowns and falls developed by Bimba.

The message beneath

The message is clear: Capoeira as culture belongs to Black people — and here only the basic and already-outmoded movements — while Capoeira as sport, with its more complex technique and its physical-education advice, belongs to white people. A gesture meant to honour Black origin ends by confining Black practitioners to the rudiments, judged primitive.

Why it matters

Marginalisation can wear the mask of homage. Splitting culture from sport along a colour line hands the valued, evolving technique to one side and the museum-piece to the other.
