Rio Invented the Cage Fight Before the UFC
6 MIN READ
Fighters from Japan, the Caribbean, France, Brazil, Europe and the United States met in Rio — and the free fights now sold as UFC and Bellator were born there.
WHY THIS ARTICLE
Mixed martial arts are seen as a late American invention. The thesis locates their origin in early-twentieth-century Rio — the luta livre and vale tudo, fought without protection, without time limits, without weight classes.
A century-old fight culture
From the late nineteenth century, fighters from the four corners of the world — Japan, the Caribbean, France, Brazil, Europe, the United States — wrestled, exchanged and perfected themselves together in great pugilistic encounters, followed by large crowds and widely relayed by the city's newspapers.
The birth of vale tudo
The free fights now promoted by the two great American organisations, UFC and Bellator, whose success only grows, took their origin in Rio de Janeiro. These mixed combats — called luta livre, and later vale tudo — took place without protection, sometimes without time limits and without weight categories. Against this secular pugilistic culture, to enter the city claiming to beat every fighter present, as the Bahians did, was a sign of great courage, great naivety or genuine pretension.
Why it matters
The cage fight is not a Las Vegas invention but a Rio inheritance. And the same fact reframes the Bahian defeats of 1949: they were fought on the home ground of a century-old ring culture.
